I have been working for the Iowa Flood Center since its inception. My primary responsibility is the maintenance of 48+ rain gauges located at 24+ sites within our Rain Gauge Network. This consists of calibrating, leveling, and cleaning the gauges, as well as site maintenance on a bi-weekly rotation. Each winter, the rain gauges are removed for deep cleaning and calibration at the lab. I also assist in the deployment, repair, and maintenance of other instruments as needed, such as stream gauges, soil moisture probes, and other meteorological equipment. Maintenance of these data-collection instruments ensures that all data collected are accurate and not skewed by dirt or debris. Accuracy is key to the development and validation of flood predication models.
