I am exploring a variety of relatively inexpensive techniques for automated river stage measurements that target medium and small rivers. This is important since even though the U.S. Geological Survey operates a large network of stream gauging stations on larger rivers, river stage is unavailable in many locations, especially on smaller rivers and streams. One of the techniques that I am exploring is a radio-based instrument that holds promise as an inexpensive sensor that can collect and transmit date very quickly during floods.
