My research interests are uncertainty and risk analysis in river flooding.  My initial research activity at IIHR was focused on the implementation of standardized uncertainty analysis in hydraulic and hydrologic measurements.  Currently, I plan to extend this work to flood modeling studies.  As the first step, I will focus on the simulation of a large reach of the lower Iowa River corridor using Mike 21 (flood simulation software for 2D modeling) and MIKE 11 (for 1D modeling) using USGS Digital Elevation Model data and channel bathymetry. The results of these simulations will be eventually combined with MIKE FLOOD (1D and 2D flood simulation engines) to investigate flood risk resulting from a given rainfall intensity in the catchment area. Finally, estimates for elemental uncertainties and standardized methodologies for propagation of uncertainties will be used to assess total uncertainties in prediction and in flood risk.
