I find water and policy fascinating. I am currently using maps of stream channels and creating flood inundation maps for Poweshiek County. This is a pilot study funded by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to determine the expected development cost for these maps in a typical Iowa county. The DNR will use this to evaluate private contract estimates for other Iowa counties. Ultimately, the stream and flood maps will assist officials in planning emergency response during flood events.

After completing this pilot study, I hope my involvement segues into research directly involving policy. We face exciting new challenges to develop a flood inundation prediction tool that is in a usable format for technical personnel, officials, and the public.
